Killing a Live concert

Image
(Image courtesy Google Images) As alerted to a music concert by IR on TV by some pained comments on my Twitter TL. It was a concert organized in Canada but the side acts of actor / director Parthiban & actor Vivek put me off considerably that I switched channels soon. Still do not understand the wisdom of these acts in a music concert. Remember the pained comments I mentioned at the start; well they were regarding the quality of singing by some of the stalwarts of the playback industry. The essence of good singing is pitching and these days the play back greats seem to be having a problem with their pitching while singing on stage. Considering that these concerts are paid and there are many who spend good money to watch a performance, poor singing is a disservice to the fans. I understand the challenges on a stage but that is the least expected of a pro...

How much is your life worth?

Image
I remember reading a story where a certain king wanted to know what his life worth was. All the courtiers were dumbfounded not wanting to displease the king by quoting too high or too less since kings can get temperamental. The problem was solved when a wise man said that the king was worth not more than 29 pieces of silver since Jesus Christ was betrayed for only 30 silver pieces. The king was pleased with the answer and felt humbled and so ended the story. If I were to pose the same question to you, what would be the answer? It could be 29 pieces of silver or just 2 rupees if you were a tribal hailing from Orissa. I work in an industry where calculating the human life value, no matter how absurd the concept may sound is a daily practice. In this industry the value of one’s life is usually measured by the income generating capability of the individual. For a salaried individual the easiest measure is to express the value as a factor of X where X will be the annual income...

A wish on Women's Day

Image
Much has been written about the day and views have flown across the spectrum and I have added my piece to the pile already. This post is not about the day, it is about everyday. There was an advertisement made years ago with a brilliant tagline that still remains with me even though I can remember neither the product nor the brand. In this mad journey of life women end up with a raw deal. You know what I am talking about so I will not go further. People may assume that working women are a recent phenomenon but look around and there are so many self employed, the entrepreneurs and many more in domestic service who ensure that the fires are burning in their homes. They do all that, run homes and still manage with the same twenty four hours like the men. In this they tend to have very little time for themselves to enjoy the small joys of life. I mentioned the absence of holidays for the informal sector in an earlier post, but women in general have no holidays irrespectiv...

Women's day - II

Image
(Image courtesy - Google Images) So why are women better than men? In no particular order: -          they can identify between magenta & mauve -          they can remember when you last left the bath room light burning 5 years ago -          they can shop for hours to buy a hair clip and yet feel delighted by it -          they can harasses countless shopkeepers to empty all the racks and yet walk away empty handed without any guilt -          they will remember if you have forgotten to take your pills but will forget their break fast -          they will ensure that food at home taste...

Women's Day

Image
(Image courtesy Google images) On this women’s day I wish that men keep away the flowers, wishes, cards, gifts and all the commercial trappings and -          Acknowledge that women are an integral part of their lives -          Accept that women complement men and vice versa -          Appreciate women for what they are -          Concede that there are things women can do better and there are some things only they can do -          Free them from the shackles so that they may realize their potential and understand themselves -          Keep ego aside and understand that they are equals -          Love the women unconditionally -          Pr...

A date with the Elphinstone Bridge across the Adyar river

Image
A date with the Elphinstone Bridge across the Adyar river This was an activity of the Chennai Bloggers Club to explore possibilities of retrieving a part of the history of the city from and giving it back to the public through blogging, media & social action.  I volunteered for this at the outset for two reasons one the project was unusual & interesting and two my wife has done sampling in the Adyar and is knowledgeable about the environs. So I signed up for the blogging couple and our little one who could be left alone. Surprisingly the initial enthusiasm flickered and on the eve of the visit the number of participants was a big question. But such trifles cannot defeat the administrator of the CBC so easily and the event proceeded as planned. So the confirmed participants were Bragadeesh P, Jennifer Clement & I along with Trinity of course and so after some brainstorming late into the night the plan was made. It was to catch the sunrise at the Adyar. ...
